Absolute Maximum!

All time record 122 entries for the 40th Anniversary Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe !

Although the maxiumum entry quota for the 40th anniversary Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe was set initially at 100 boats as soon as registration opened in October 2017 it very soon became evident that demand was outstripping supply. And so by January 31st, the number of entries increased to 120. A few days after the official closing of registration the record entry was announced for this 40th year anniversary edition On November 4, 2018 there will be the biggest ever number of solo racers setting off from  from Saint-Malo heading for Pointe-à-Pitre in Guadeloupe. Fittingly this is an historic number for a legendary race.

At 40 years on from the first Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe, entries are highly coveted, and the 100 boat limit which was considered ambitious a few months ago, had to be expanded.
OC Sport Pen Duick, the organising company, in consultation with the city of Saint-Malo and the Guadeloupe region set the new fleet limit at 120 and it was the sailors of Class 40 and the Rhum Multi categories which benefited most. But when the entries finally closed on March 31st, the organisers and the race director were faced with one last equation to solve. Of the eight places open to the Ultimes, two were not filled, and of the maximum of seven for the Multi50, one place was vacant. The IMOCA and Mono Rhum were the only classes which had not benfited from an increase and so the chance to slightly increase their limits, in line with the NoR provision for 'communication vessels'. was taken. The subsequent increase in the limit to 122 soloists is explained by Mathieu Sarrot, Director of Events OC Sport Pen Duick after discussion with the Mayor of Saint-Malo Claude Renoult and his elected officials:

"In the interest of fairness, we wanted to bring in entries in classes which had not yet been granted an increase in numbers. This means now the number of entries in the Rhum Mono fleet will be 17 and in the IMOCA it will be 23. With the IMOCA fleet we wanted to prove ourselves a little more flexible, showing solidarity with the class. With the Barcelona World Race being canceled, we did not want to deprive one or two sailors of their chance to take on the major event of the 2018 - 2019 season."

Logistical changes needed.

The bumper sized 40th Anniversary fleet is great news for the historic Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe but with 122 racers on the start line and challenging the famous Transatlantic classic course, it will impact significantly on the logistics and safety planning. "We are currently considering the idea of dividing the boats on the starting line," confirms Jacques Caraës, Race Director.  "The start for all classes will of course always be at the same time on a single line. However, the fleet, which was already split in two between the multihulls on one side and the monohulls on the other, could now give way to further sub-divisions according to class and speed potential so this line would be between 3 and 3.5 miles long"

But in the meantime welcome aboard to the 122 solo sailors of the Route du Rhum - Destination Guadeloupe 2018!
