Hignard Breaks Mast, Intends to Finish

This Friday, November 21, Paul Hignard contacted the race director of the Route du Rhum-Destination Guadeloupe to inform them that his Class 40 Bruneau has suffered a broken mast.

The incident occurred at 20:30hrs UTC in an E'ly breeze of around 17kts on a relatively flat sea when he was positioned about 370 miles from the finish. He said that the mast broke between the first and second in an east wind of around 17 knots on a flat sea as he progressed to 370 miles from the finish. The youngest skipper in the race, 19, made it clear his is not seeking assistance. He has secured his boat and aims to take advantage of the manageable downwind conditions to set a jury rig and make his way to Pointe a Pitre.
Race Direction immediately alerted CROSS Griz Nez which has been in contact with CROSS Antilles-Guyane. They stay in touch and monitor the the progress of the young skipper from Saint Malo who intends to keep racing.
