Durham is a small city with steep, hilly embankments. Its name originated from the city's landscape, as Durham means ‘hill island” in Old English. Sometimes known as Durhum, Durham is located in England and is recognized for its breath taking and historic architecture such as the Norman Cathedral and castle. Despite being a relatively compressed city, there is a large range of facilities including shops, markets and restaurants. The main shopping area is closed off from traffic and street entertainment is abundant. Right in the centre of the city is the Millennium Place development that boasts a 500 seat Gala Theatre and Cinema.
The scenery in Durham is beautiful with a multitude of flowers and trees. During spring and summer, the locals show off their impressive floral displays and prizes are won. If you are interested in rowing, you can join the rowers who speed down the river or perhaps go on a boat to take in the views. If you are interested in running, cross country events are held at a 19 th century racecourse and runners all over the world come to attend events.
Durham hosts a number of festivals and events to unite the community. The Miners' Gala, a century old festivity, takes place every July bringing the town together to attend the special service. In June, they unite to attend the Durham Regatta which is the second oldest regatta in Britain .
